Saint Austell, EnglandThese two single-storey barns (refs 29635 and 29636) have been converted from an old grain mill and stores. Cosy and warm in the winter and cool and airy in the summer the grain stores provide a well equipped home from home. Alongside a variety of board games and books, there’s a large collection of DVDs to enjoy on the 50" TVs. There’s a sunny south-facing garden, with a hideaway den with day bed, in which to enjoy an afternoon snooze. With no light pollution, there’s ample opportunity for star-gazing the dark skies.
Little Polgrain Barns are in the heart of the Roseland Peninsula, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s a walker’s paradise, with flower-filled lanes giving way to stunning coastal scenery. A stroll along the lane beings you to the hamlet of Portholland, a pretty cove with a history of smuggling. The pubs at St Ewe and Tregony are local family and dog friendly pubs, within a few miles radius. Unspoilt sandy beaches, ancient fishing harbours, tiny art galleries, great seaside cafes and pubs makes this a place with something for everyone. The cafe in nearby Portscatho offers feast nights throughout the summer. Kayaking, horse riding, cycling and sailing are all close at hand.
This area of Cornwall is renowned for its sub-tropical gardens. Caerhays Castle has featured on numerous TV and feature film dramas and is surrounded by acres of magnificent camellias and magnolias. Many of the plants were originally shipped from China in the 19th century. The Lost Gardens of Heligan is a short drive away, there visitors can spend all day wandering through the walled gardens, jungle valley and enjoy watching the heritage breeds at the South West’s first Rare Breed Farm Park. The Eden Project is also nearby, it’s famous biomes nestle in a reclaimed china clay pit. This amazing complex has a huge indoor rainforest, full of exotic planting, waterfalls and treetop walkways. It’s an ecological hub, with themed seasonal events and provides a spectacular setting for their regular music festival, the Eden Sessions. Charlestown, a regular location for ’Poldark’, is a few miles away in St Austell. It has a shipwreck centre and offers trips on its famous tall ships.
Further afield but easily reached by car or train, the North Coast offers great days out for surfing and visiting the popular destinations of Padstow, Watergate Bay and St Ives. Beach ¾ mile. It is an original Cornish stone and slate dwelling. Whilst being within a few seconds walk on a private walk way to the hustle and bustle of Tintagel Village, you can still enjoy the peaceful serenity that Mews Cottage offers being in a small secluded area from the village. Mews has a free parking permit available which is provided by the owners.
The historical cottage, built around the 1890’s and was a former stables for a local Inn, feels bright and stylish whilst maintaining the rustic feel of the property. After an action-packed day exploring the coast, enter into the kitchen/dining area where you will find everything you need to enjoy a self-catered break. Head into the spacious lounge where you can unwind on the comfortable seating, watch a film on the smart TV whilst enjoying the glows of the electric wood burner in the background. This warm and light room has double doors which lead into the enclosed courtyard area which can create a fresh and airy feel throughout the entire day. Perfect for enjoying the warm Cornish evenings or a morning coffee. An absolute sun trap. Upstairs are two cosy bedrooms, wonderfully presented with high apexed ceilings displaying exposed wooden beams. The master bedroom offers a kingsize bed and next door is the light and airy twin bedroom. A shower room with heated towel rail completes the picture. Enjoy the fantasitic span of the countryside and a distant sea view.
Mews Cottage is just a few steps from the main street, with a variety of shops, pubs, restaurants and Tintagel Castle, the mythical home of King Arthur. There is also a good bus serivce in Tintagel so you have the option of leaving the car. The coast is within a 10-minute walk and the nearest beach at Bossiney Cove is just 1.3 miles away or a 25-minute walk across the fields. Within easy reach are the coastal villages of Boscastle and Port Isaac, the latter made famous by the TV series, ’Doc Martin’. Further along the coast are the golden, sandy beaches of Rock and Polzeath. Plenty of walking and local paths perfect for the family, and prime dog walking places on the doorstep of Mews Cottage. Trebarwith Strand a 10 minutes drive is a perfect beach for this, dog friendly all year round, but is also accessable via the coastal path past St Materiana’s church.
