Westward Ho! in Devon or Bude in Cornwall are within a 40-minute drive. Westward Ho! has a long golden sandy beach backed by a pebble ridge. On the northern end is the Northern Burrows, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, with sand dunes, salt marsh, grassland, rocky shore and is teeming with wildlife. A shorter drive south takes you to Dartmoor National Park where you can have a delightful pub lunch in the village of Belstone or take a walk on the moors and see Dartmoor ponies. Or catch a ferry to Lundy Island from Bideford, where you can also hire bikes and head along the Tarka Trail. Beach 18¼ miles. Shop 5½ miles, pub and restaurant 90 yards.
