For keen walkers and cyclists, the Test Way and the Clarendon Way are on the doorstop. For the fishing enthusiasts, the River Test is the pre-eminent chalk stream and has exceptional clarity of water which is prized by fly fishers the world over. Physically, it is the longest, 39 miles from source to estuary. Historically, it is generally regarded as the birthplace of modern fly fishing. This area is also where the yesteryear TV programme ‘Wurzle Gummidge’ was filmed.

The nearest town is Stockbridge, 3 miles, with its abundance of independent specialist shops including tea rooms, pubs and restaurants, many serving local produce, as well as art galleries, craft and gift shops, clothing and traditional butchers. The prosperous market town of Romsey is 7 miles, and being the larger of the two towns, it has all of the above and more. Romsey also has an independent department store, supermarket and a magnificent Norman Abbey dating back to 907AD. Just outside the town and set in extensive parkland is the 18th century mansion of Broadlands, the former home of Lord Palmerston and the late Lord Louis Mountbatten. Broadlands is open to the public July and August, as well as hosting a range of shows, concerts and events throughout the year. Other places to visit within an hours drive include Mottisfont Abbey and Rose Garden (National Trust) Hillier’s Arboretum, The New Forest National Park, Beaulieu Abbey and Motor Museum, Exbury gardens, Stonehenge, Wheyhill Hawk Conservancy, The Army Flying Museum, Highclere Castle, Marwell Zoo, Portsmouth Dockyard and the many beautiful beaches of the South Coast. The ever popular New Forest National Park, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which is a haven for wildlife, is nearby with many roaming ponies and cattle along the roadsides and across the heathland, as well as extensive walking, cycling and horse riding routes. There is plenty to do in the area for all ages, all year round; picturesque villages serving cream teas, vineyards, golf courses, stately homes and many family attractions. Brockenhurst is nearby, as is the popular sailing town of Lymington, which is only a 5-minute drive, with its pretty harbour, fishing trips, cobbled streets, boutiques, pubs, restaurants and day trips by ferry to the Isle of Wight.
Other places of interest nearby include Beaulieu Motor Museum, the riverside village of Bucklers Hard, Exbury Gardens, Marwell Zoo, Peppa Pig World and New Forest Owl and Otter Park, to name but a few. Further afield, but well worth the trip, are Monkey World and the Tank Museum at Bovington. The property is also within easy reach of many beaches including Mudeford, Sandbanks, Poole and Bournemouth, the nearest beach being 4 miles away at Milford-on-Sea – also great for crabbing! Nearby Cheriton has a village shop and there are two popular local pubs both serving fine fayre. The pretty Georgian town of Alresford has scenic riverside walks, further eateries, inns, tea rooms and shops. Alresford is known for being the UK’s capital of watercress farming - enjoy a trip on the Mid Hants Watercress Steam Railway for a wonderful nostalgic journey back in time! For keen cyclists and walkers there are many places to visit including The Itchen Way, Blackwood Forest, St Catherine’s Hill, Winnall Moors Nature Reserve, and also the Ox Drove cycle track. There are many good golf clubs in the area, the nearest being Alresford, 3 miles, and excellent trout or coarse fishing in the Meon Valley.
In addition to the many scenic walks in the area, there are also a range of attractions to explore. The National Trust’s Hinton Ampner is popular with all ages. The properties are within easy reach of the historic city of Winchester, 8 miles, with its ornate cathedral, The Gurkha Museum, King Alfred Monument and Winchester Science and Planetarium. There are beer and wine tours and tastings within the area too. A short drive will take you to the market towns of Alton and Petersfield, or visit Southampton and Portsmouth where you can see Spinnaker Tower, shopping outlets, the historic dockyard with ships, or enjoy a trip to the Isle of Wight by ferry. The nearest beach at Hayling Island is less than 30 minutes’ drive, and it is approximately 40 minutes’ drive to the wonderful sandy beach at West Wittering. Also within easy driving distance are Chichester with Goodwood or Fontwel Races, Jane Austen’s House, Gilbert White’s House and Gardens, Hambledon Vineyard and The New Forest. Although in a rural setting, many towns and picturesque villages are within an easy drive. There is an award-winning farm shop about a 10-minute walk away, which has local produce and a licenced café. There is also a pub serving good food just under a mile away. For the outdoor enthusiast, riding, cycling or strawberry picking are all nearby, as well as a popular water sports park. Visit Moors Valley Country Park which has orienteering, cycle hire, golf, forest Segway, walking groups, canoeing, petanque and craftmaking. There is a fishing lake close by.

The New Forest National Park provides miles of open scenic heath and woodland for walking, riding and cycling, as well as a network of footpaths and bridle paths. The lodges are less than 2 miles from the historic village square of Hamble-Le-Rice with its famous quay (you can even hop on the small pink passenger ferry to Warsash!). There are several pubs, restaurants, tea rooms and shops nearby. Hamble has good rail links from a modest train station a short walk away to London, Southampton and Portsmouth. The village has played a significant role in the country’s aviation and maritime history and there are few villages in Britain that can boast to have had a priory, a Norman church and a castle over the centuries. Today, Hamble is known as a sailing and yachting centre of excellence and many people visit to enjoy the friendly community spirit and ambiance especially during the summer months. This is an ideal base for those wishing to explore the area. Popular destinations include maritime Southampton and Portsmouth, with historic ships, designer shopping, leisure facilities and ferries to the Isle of Wight.

Little Trout is a charming, comfortable, single-storey thatched annexe forming a wing of the owner’s main home which dates back to the 17th century and has an interesting past! Historians have said that it was formerly a drinking establishment, referred to as The Trout Inn, and it was also a tea room. In the late 19th century cricket bats were made and sold at The Trout (to the great W.G. Grace, amongst others) using the local Wallop willow which was considered perfect for the purpose. Some even maintain that the village name inspired the phrase about giving a cricket ball a ’jolly good wallop.’

Little Trout is nestled in the pretty village of Nether Wallop in Hampshire’s Test Valley. Consisting of Nether Wallop, Middle Wallop and Over Wallop, the Wallops are mentioned in the Domesday Book. In 1984, Stephen Pile, a writer for the Sunday Times who also wrote The Book of Heroic Failures, was apparently fed up of going all the way to Edinburgh to the Arts Festival, so asked his friends where else they could hold an event. Someone suggested Nether Wallop. From there, the Nether Wallop International Arts Festival was born and in 1984 a host of stars of the time came together in a tent on the village playing fields including Bill Wyman, Jessye Norman, Jenny Agutter and Sir Michael Hordern. Comedians such as Rik Mayall, Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, Peter Cook, Billy Connolly, Mel Smith and Rowan Atkinson all took part and this paved the way for the first Comic Relief.

The area is known for its lovely walks and excellent trout fishing. There is a footpath behind the cottage which is ideal for dog walks, and fishing can be found 3 miles away (by prior arrangement only). There is an historic church dating back to the Saxon era, a playing field and a village tennis court about ½ mile away. The area is also renowned for the BBC version of Miss Marple and the front porch of Little Trout was actually used as the village chemist’s shop in the episode ’Murder at the Vicarage.’

Little Trout is 12 miles from the cathedral cities of Salisbury to the west and Winchester to the east, and within easy driving distance of the New Forest National Park.
