Nestled within 240 acres of unspoilt farmland, in the glorious South Hams midway between Dartmoor and the stunning south Devon beaches, Wheeldon Farm Cottages are the perfect choice for family, friends and couples to enjoy a relaxing retreat or an action packed escape at any time of year. The four delightful, pet-friendly barn conversions (refs 27214, 27215, 27216 and UKC748), which could be booked together for larger parties, sit within a lovely courtyard setting surrounded by miles of footpaths and green lanes, ideal for walking or cycling. The master bedroom in each property features a flatscreen TV, and home-made meals can be pre-ordered and delivered to the cottage (arranged direct with the owner). The cottages lie just a short distance from some of south Devon’s finest beaches and tourist attractions, including the historic town of Totnes which is just 15 minutes away and sits on the River Dart with cruises down river to Greenway and Dartmouth. A cosmopolitan town, Totnes, 7 miles away, has a vast array of independent shops, weekly markets, galleries, leisure centre and many lovely restaurants, bistros and cafés. The seaside towns of Paignton and Torquay are 40 minutes’ drive, and it is just a 15-minute drive to the yachting haven of Dartmouth, and the coastline between Dartmouth and Kingsbridge, both 7 miles away, has many stunning beaches, hidden coves and fantastic coastal walks.

Guests of these cottages can also enjoy a range of on-site facilities suitable for all the family, including a heated indoor swimming pool (available via a booking system) with a private changing room and shower. There is a large games room set over two floors, including a fitness room with a cross trainer, treadmill, rowing machine and exercise bike. The top floor of the games room has a full-size American pool table, big sofa and Sky TV. The bottom floor has table tennis and table football. On-site there is also a laundry and ironing room. If you are looking for adventure and an adrenalin rush, then Wheeldon Farm Cottages will not disappoint. The Wheeldon Off-Road Centre, adjacent to the cottages, boasts a purpose-built, 30,000 square foot indoor arena (split in separate halves for motorbikes and bicycles) and junior training circuit, and is the ideal year-round venue for the whole family to learn to ride a motorcycle in a fun and controlled environment. Discounted rates are available for children and adults during the school holidays (booking by arrangement and on arrival), providing children and adults with the opportunity to experience the ultimate, two-wheel off-road adventure for the first time. The instructors at Wheeldon Farm are all ACU accredited and will guide the children through their paces every step of the way. For some activities, all the kit, clothing, boots, gloves, helmets and fun bikes are provided. All that’s needed is the enthusiasm to have a great deal of fun! In addition to all the motorbike fun, a range of other activities can also be organised locally, including horse riding, golf, go-karting and trout and carp fishing. Also, clay pigeon shooting, air rifle and archery are available - these are run by a fully qualified instructor and all equipment is provided. The activities run on a Monday, Thursday and Sunday. Slade Barn is located in a lovely rural location just a couple of miles away from Exmoor National Park and 1 mile from the quiet hamlet of Charles. Situated in a tranquil valley on the owners’ working sheep and goat farm overlooking a forest and fields with deer and wildlife wandering past, and surrounded by quiet country lanes. Slade Barn has a lovely outlook, and the semi-detached barn conversion has accommodation on two levels with twin open staircases leading up to the first floor where you’ll find a nice little reading area, a twin bedroom and a shower room on one side and two further bedrooms on the other. The fourth bedroom is en-suite and on the ground floor. The kitchen area has everything you’ll need for your stay, whilst the ground floor benefits from underfloor heating. Outside there’s an ample private lawn and patio garden with outdoor furniture.
The village of Brayford is 2 miles from the cottage with its 900-year-old Church of All Saints High Bray set on the hill above the Bray Valley. There are also many charming village pubs and restaurants to explore nearby. The village is close to the dramatic North Devon coast with some of the best beaches in the country – a day trip to Woolacombe and Saunton are not to be missed. The South West coastal path and the Tarka Trail are superb for walking or running and the latter is excellent for cycling too; the coastline is varied, dramatic and interesting to say the least. RHS Rosemoor, Marwood Gardens, Arlington Court, Clovelly, Exmoor Zoo, the Combe Martin Dinosaur Park and Hartland Abbey are all within driving distance and for the keen golfers, Portmore Golf club just outside Barnstaple and Saunton Golf club are both within easy reach too. Visit the National Trust’s Watersmeet Gorge, Valley of the Rocks and the funicular cliff railway in Lynton/Lynmouth. Up on Exmoor, there are various walks to suit all abilities, as well as pretty places worth visiting including Tarr Steps, Landacre Bridge and the charming little village of Withypool, not to mention the dark star gazing skies on the moors. The wild beauty of Dartmoor is 20 minutes away with its abundance of wildlife and dramatic landscapes. Numerous National Trust properties are close by including Agatha Christie’s Greenway. Steam trains travel from Kingswear to Paignton and Totnes to Buckfastleigh. Visit historic Dartmouth with bustling boat harbour, castle, contemporary art galleries and boutiques. Salcombe with its beaches, sailing and watersports is also easily accessible, as well as Blackpool Sands, Slapton and picturesque Dittisham with its annual crab catching competition. Slightly further afield, East Cornwall and the Eden Project are within an hour’s drive, and the East Devon coast is easily accessible with its unique fishing port at Beer and beaches at Sidmouth and Branscombe. Located under 3 miles from Crackington Haven, a coastal village at the head of a cove on the Atlantic coast and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is popular with tourists, walkers, surfers and geology enthusiasts. At high tide the shoreline is mainly stony but when low you are greeted to a lovely golden sandy beach with plenty of rock pools to enjoy. And surfers, both experienced and beginners enjoy the varying tidal conditions the cove provides and with lifeguard cover from July to end of September you can relax a little bit more too! If it’s the beach you want with miles of sand, swimming and surf then you’ll be spoiled for choice in the wider area. Much of the coastline is owned by the National Trust and is a haven for wildlife, providing fabulous walking opportunities. There are many pretty coves and inlets to discover within a short drive of this property including Boscastle, Morwenstow and stunning Tintagel, inextricably linked to the legend of King Arthur. Further afield the fishing port of Padstow is a popular tourist destination too. Bude is a fabulous coastal town that once visited, you will want to come back to time and time again. It has something for everyone including great beaches for relaxing and building sandcastles on, rockpools for investigating at low tide and cafés to watch it all from. The rolling waves are great for surfing all year round and the footpaths by the restored canal or on the South West Coast Path offer you a superb opportunity to explore and appreciate the outstanding countryside.
Bude also has a superb golf course, indoor swimming pool, bowling alley/indoor play area and a heritage centre at Bude Castle. It also has a good selection of local shops, supermarkets, cafés, pubs, restaurants and an excellent information centre. Broadshade Holiday Apartments are self-catering apartments located just a few minutes’ walk from Paignton, a seaside town making up part of the beautiful English Riviera. The harbour is just down the road with an array of bars and restaurants as well as a small convenience store for stocking up on essentials. Slightly further past the harbour is the large green and beach for a great day out. There are an abundance of activities to do nearby such as a large cinema, crazy golf course, leisure arcades and the pier all located on the stretch of green/beach, plenty to keep the whole family entertained.
Within the town there is also a train and bus station, very handy for guests not wanting to drive. From the train station guests can also take the ’Round Robin’ tour, this famous and award winning tour is the best way to explore South Devon! Town Mills is a historic, Grade II listed former Mill and Manor House situated on the banks of the River Torridge on the outskirts of Great Torrington in North Devon. Built by Lord Rolle in 1823 and made famous as ‘Tarka’s Mill’ in Henry Williamson’s book ‘Tarka The Otter’, Town Mills started life as a Grain Mill and a Saw Mill, both mills being powered by waterwheels. Now, almost 200 years later, Town Mills has been sympathetically converted into seven well-appointed holiday cottages all with their own charm and personality.
From a cosy holiday cottage that sleeps three people, to a larger six-bedroom holiday cottage that sleeps twelve, every cottage benefits from character and charm combined with modern convenience. Located in the beautiful North Devon countryside, Town Mills is ideally situated for visiting the North Devon Coast, Exmoor, travelling The Tarka Trail, or visiting our next-door neighbour, the RHS Gardens at Rosemoor.
Riverside is one of the most popular cottages at Town Mills, partly because of its location and private veranda overlooking the river. This charming two-storey cottage originally formed part of the stable blocks almost 200 years ago. It is a good-sized four-bedroom property. On the ground floor there is a double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, and a twin bedroom. Both of these bedrooms have French windows offering easy access to the veranda. With nobody to overlook you, waking up to the views of the river and countryside is a great way to start the day. The main bathroom is also downstairs, and has an over-bath shower, plus toilet and wash basin. Two further twin rooms are located upstairs. A selection of outdoor furniture on the veranda provides the ideal setting for enjoying a little al-fresco dining whilst looking at the local wildlife. You may spot an otter if you’re lucky.
On-site, there is a indoor shared swimming pool which is kept warm between 31-32 degrees, so is suitable for even the smallest guests. The owners offer the opportunity to reserve the pool for your exclusive use, allowing you the chance for a session of family fun, or a quiet moment to relax. There is a games room with a free pool table and a classic table football, along with a dart board and fruit machine. Located by the riverside, but securely fenced, the children’s play area offers picnic bench seating with swings, slide and climbing frame, as well as an elevated playhouse, its the ideal spot to spend a lazy afternoon with a picnic whilst trying to spot an otter or some of the other many local wildlife visitors. For younger guests, there is a kids hideaway where they can escape to. On the opposite side of the Mill there is a garden where you can enjoy a few moments, maybe have a picnic or watch the peacocks as they wander around.
The countryside around Town Mills is dotted with sleepy villages nestled among the hills, while extensive woodlands, traversed by many footpaths, offer the chance to experience the area’s natural beauty. Local attractions include the renowned RHS gardens at Rosemoor (adjacent) and Dartington Crystal, offering a factory tour and visitor centre. Great Torrington is only a mile away with good shopping and amenities, and there is golf at nearby Hartland. Town Mills adjoins Torrington Common which extends to 365 acres, incorporating 20 miles of footpaths. The common is a haven for wildlife. The ‘Big Sheep’ and ‘Milky Way’ theme parks are each less than 10 miles away.
The River Torridge runs downstream to the ancient port of Bideford, still with a working quay offering boat trips to Lundy Island. Just around the corner is the attractive little town of Appledore with its colourful houses and narrow streets. To either side lies Devon’s most spectacular stretch of coastal scenery – a chain of magnificent cliffs and rocky promontories, interspersed here and there by long flat sandy beaches, where the Atlantic breakers roll in to create ideal surfing conditions. There are splendid beaches at Instow and Westward Ho!, the latter bordered by the Royal North Devon Golf Club, and the Northam Nature Reserve. Further west is the supremely picturesque Clovelly, with narrow, cobbled main street descending at a dizzying gradient to the little harbour below. The cathedral city of Exeter can be reached via a delightful drive through lush river valleys.

This medieval farm, mentioned in the Domesday book, enjoys uninterrupted countryside views across the valley to the village of Witheridge beyond. There are many interesting walks across the land and along the river nearby, and in the autumn, it is possible to help with the annual apple harvest and cider production. This part of Devon is an excellent touring base with easy access to lots of places of interest. Nearby you can explore the Two Moors Way, visit RHS Rosemoor, The Grand Western Canal, Knightshayes House or the breathtaking scenery at Exmoor National Park, a short drive away. There are plenty of National Trust properties in the area, as well as some fabulous villages and farm shops.
West Yeo Farm is just a couple of miles from Witheridge and a short drive from the market town of South Molton, known for its pannier market, quaint tea rooms and antiques shops. The accommodation is set midway between Devon’s two coastlines, convenient for a day out to either. The award-winning North Devon coastline is within a 50-minute drive and has golden sandy surfing beaches, whilst the Jurassic South Devon coastal beauty spots are within an hour’s drive.

This property is located near the popular port town of Ilfracombe and just under 3 miles from the nearest beach. It is situated on a small complex of 5 star properties, one of which the owners live in and is accessed via a private agricultural lane owned by the adjacent property. The Shippon is a four bedroom barn conversion with an open plan living space which is the hub of the property. There is a piano in the lounge. The kitchen has a fantastic island with an induction hob where real foodies can cook up a storm while chatting with other guests who can sit with a drink whilst their meal is being prepared. Ilfracombe is perfectly situated to enjoy countless other North Devon attractions such as the popular Tarka Trail, Exmoor National Park 20 minutes’ drive away and the breath taking Valley of the Rocks at Lynton with its incredible sea views, rugged cliffs and amazing funicular cliff railway to Lynmouth, which opened in 1890 and is the highest and steepest entirely water powered railway in the world!
There are also numerous great pubs within walking distance 4km (plus the owners are happy to pick you up on the way home!). Sawmills in Watermouth Valley and 1675 traditional pub in Berrynarbor and stunning Sandy Cove Hotel in Combe Martin Bay which has stunning coastal views. This area plays host to world class beaches including Saunton Sands, Woolacombe and Croyde – all of which are famous for their surfing and vast stretches of golden sand. Beach 2¾ miles.

North Barn is a luxurious, detached barn conversion with four immaculate bedrooms, accommodating up to eight guests in total. No attention to detail has been forgotten, it is a truly idyllic holiday home retreat. This beautiful holiday home benefits from lovely countryside walks close by on Dartmoor and Exmoor, and cyclists and walkers are well catered for in the area with the famous Tarka Trail within easy reach as well as The Granite Way. The Tarka Train Line is a great alternative to a day driving, catch this local line at Eggesford Junction and head up to the coast or to the cathedral city of Exeter.
Iddesleigh, Hatherleigh and Winkleigh are just a short drive away and offer shops and pubs. The village of Iddesleigh, which is a 5-minute drive away, is known as War Horse Country as this is where Michael Morpurgo wrote the novel ’War Horse’. You will also be within easy reach of a riding stable, coarse fishing at Stafford Moor and War Horse Valley Farm Park, and slightly further afield are RHS Rosemoor Gardens, The Big Sheep and The Milky Way.
The stunning surfing beaches of the North Devon and North Cornwall coastline are an easy drive away for a day out, with sandy beaches and sheltered coves to explore including Bude, Saunton Sands, Croyde and Westward Ho! Discover the magnificent points of High Willhays and Yes Tor at Dartmoor National Park, where you can enjoy a scenic hike to the summit for unrivaled views, before embarking on an exhilarating outdoor adventure of canoeing or climbing with Adventure Okehampton. A visit to Castle Drogo is also not to be missed, an extraordinary castle with fantastic gardens, a shop and a restaurant with the moors as the backdrop.

Nestling in the foothills of the stunning Exmoor National Park on a working farm, The Farm House (UKC1339) and Bridge House (UKC1340) are two thoughtfully converted, semi-detached houses offering guests comfortable accommodation in this wonderful part of Devon. Centred on a cobbled courtyard with a pond, the properties benefit from the use of their own private sitting-out area as well as a very large, well-maintained garden with stunning views across the countryside. There are some great walks from the farm up onto Exmoor which is designated as an International Dark Sky Reserve, and there are a number of walks on the estate that take you down through woods and along valleys by rivers and past lakes. The walks are mainly off road and a wide variety of wildlife can be seen, from the wild red deer that Exmoor is famous for, to the tiny but vibrant kingfisher. On the estate there are 2 spring fed lakes; these have a population of wild brown trout. Fishing on the lakes is available in the fishing season. Access is by foot or by 4x4 vehicle as they are both located along farm tracks unsuitable for cars. Please ask for directions to the lakes.

The village of North Molton, a short drive away, has a good local shop and pub. The larger town of South Molton has a wider range of shops and local amenities.
During your stay, there is plenty to see and do. Highlights on the moor include the pretty village of Withypool, and the the famous and ancient Tarr Steps. Climb to Exmoor’s highest point at Dunkery Beacon, and then pop into the Dulverton for an afternoon cream tea. There is extensive walking to suit all abilities across the moor, and towards the coastline there are dramatic, steep cliffs at Countisbury. In the Victorian towns of Lynton and Lynmouth, there is plenty to see and do, and the two towns are connected by the famous funicular cliff railway. Other local highlights include the Valley of the Rocks, and there is also access to the South West Coast Path. For good beaches, head up to Woolacombe, Putborough and Croyde. You will be able to enjoy some of the best beaches in the country with surfing and rock pooling. For those with young children, Exmoor Zoo, Combe Martin Wildlife Park and Watermouth Castle all provide an interesting and entertaining day out. There are National Trust properties at Arlington and Knighthayes. Golf, fishing, cycling and safaris across the moor are all available locally. Beach 15 miles.
