The market town of Clitheroe is regarded as the capital of Lancashire’s Ribble Valley and apart from its Norman castle, has a great selection of shops, bars, cafes and restaurants. Other popular towns and villages within the Ribble Valley include Longridge, Chatburn, Ribchester, Waddington and Whalley. With stunning scenery and lots of charming country pubs, the Ribble Valley is perfect for walkers and cyclists. The Forest of Bowland, which is one of the UK’s designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, covers over 300 square miles of rural Lancashire, and North Yorkshire is right on the doorstep. Other popular walks include Pendle Hill and the Tolkien Trail. The Forest of Gisburn is just 12 miles away. Other popular activities nearby include golf, fishing and swimming.

The Beacon Fell Country Park consists of 271 acres of woodland, moorland and farmland. The Beacon Fell summit is 873 feet above sea level and offers spectacular views of the Forest of Bowland and Morecambe Bay. On a clear day it is even possible to see the Isle of Man. The Forest of Bowland is 23 miles away, here you will find mountain bike trail at Gisburn Forest, with green, blue, red and black routes available. Glide easily along the mellow trail by Bottoms Beck, twist and shout through Park Wood, dance with your bike down Hully Gully or grit your teeth and rush down the Bigfoot slab, everyone should find something that will make them smile.

The world renowned Tolkein Trail starts and ends in nearby Hurst Green, meaning literary enthusiasts can discover the Ribble landscape that may have inspired J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. A dog friendly pub serving food is around a 10-minute walk from the cottage. In the Ribble valley you can explore Clitheroe Castle Museum, former the Steward’s House, a Grade II listed building that was built in the 18th century and in the small town of Longridge just 8 miles away you’ll find a selection of supermarkets, cafés, takeaways, pubs serving food and even a quaint cinema.

For those wishing to venture further afield, both the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Parks can be reached in around an hour, or the beautiful Fylde Coast and sand dunes of Lytham St Annes, can be reached within a 30-minute drive. Blackpool is 20 miles away with the Sandcastle Waterpark, the UK’s largest Indoor Waterpark with more than 18 fantastic slides and attractions in a tropical 84 degree climate and Blackpool Pleasure Beach where you can find one of the UK’s tallest fastest roller coasters. Whether you spend your time relaxing in the hot tub, or exploring the beautiful countryside and wealth of attractions, Adamsons Barn makes a fantastic base. Beach 20 miles. Belmont is a wonderful detached bungalow that can be found in the small village of Hesketh Bank, just 20 minutes from the Victorian seaside resort of Southport. Bright, airy, spacious and newly renovated in 2020, it’s a wonderful base for couples and families, and their four legged friends. Hesketh Bank itself is home to ample local amenities including a high end supermarket, farm shop and takeaway. In the neighbouring village of Tarleton you’ll also find a café and a couple of pubs serving good food.

An area popular with bird watchers and nature lovers, the Ribble Estuary Natural Nature Reserve is 5,000 acres of salt marsh and is less than 3 miles away. It’s home to an impressive range of wildlife, with more than a quarter of a million migrating water birds feeding in and around the estuary. There’s also Hesketh Out Marsh, Marshside and Martin Mere Nature Reserve all easily accessible.

For lovers of the great outdoors, a network of footpaths and dedicated cycle routes radiate from the area, and in Southport you can pick up the Trans Pennine Trail. The popular seaside town of Southport has lots to offer, including 22 miles of coastline and the second longest pleasure pier in the British Isles. There are shops, bars and mouth-watering restaurants, together with traditional seaside amusements, a cinema and an indoor water park. The train station in Southport provides easy access to both Liverpool and Chester for anyone craving the bright lights and culture of a big city.

Other places of interest nearby include the National Trust’s Rufford Old Hall (10 mins) and the National Trust’s Formby, a glorious beach with dramatic sand dunes, surrounded by sweeping coastal pinewoods (40 mins). Slightly further afield, the Ribble Valley and city of Lancaster can both be reached in about an hour, and just a little bit further again is the southern Lake District National Park or the Forest of Bowland (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). A few miles inland is the neighbouring village of Thornton, where you’ll find more shops, pubs and restaurants together with an 18th Century windmill and Wyre Estuary Country Park. The bright lights of Blackpool, Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Blackpool Tower are just 4 miles round the coast, and a few miles further you’ll reach the beautiful sandy beaches of St Annes and, wonderfully cosmopolitan, Lytham. The Fylde coastal resorts of Blackpool, Lytham, St Annes and Cleveleys can be reached in around a 20-minute drive and between them is much to see and do. In wonderfully cosmopolitan Lytham there is a variety of bars, cafés, boutique shops and restaurants, and in St Annes you will find a beautiful sandy beach with colourful beach huts. The area is internationally famous for golf and the towns also host various events throughout the year, including the Lytham Proms and St Annes Kite Festival. Blackpool needs little introduction with its many attractions including the famous tower, Madame Tussauds Waxworks, the Sealife Centre, Pleasure Beach and Blackpool Zoo. For a change of scenery the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which is much loved for its stunning countryside and picturesque villages, can be reached in about half an hour. An hour’s drive can take you to the Lake District or city centres of both Manchester and Liverpool. Beach 9½ miles.

The Lancashire mill town of Bacup is around a 2-mile drive, and here you’ll find a comprehensive range of shops and amenities. Located on the Lancashire/Yorkshire boundary, it’s also home to Stubbylee Park which has an outdoor gym, tennis courts and an off road cycling ‘pump track’. Rawtenstall is around a 15-minute drive and boasts cobbled streets, a thriving market and local independent businesses. It has one of the best dry ski slopes in England and is also the northern point of the heritage East Lancs Railway.
The mountain bike trails of Lee and Cragg Quarry can be picked up just outside Bacup, and the surrounding countryside including the nearby Rossendale Valley is popular with walkers and hikers. Other local attractions include The Whitaker Art Gallery, the ’Singing Ringing Tree’ and the ’Halo’, Burnley and Rossendale’s panopticons, and the National Trust’s Gawthorpe Hall. Finally, the city of Manchester is around a 40-minute drive or a 30-minute direct train from Walsden or Todmorden train stations.
