Nearby, the historic town of Bedale, 2½ miles, offers a weekly market every Tuesday and various events during the year, together with a range of individual shops, restaurants and pubs. Masham, renowned for the Black Sheep Brewery, is 10 minutes’ drive and Richmond with its Norman castle, Georgian architecture and thriving theatre is also easily accessible. Historic York and its many attractions is within easy driving distance. Alternatively, just enjoy the wonderful Yorkshire countryside either by car, bicycle or on foot. Shop and pub ¾ mile. In the distance the dramatic peak of Addleborough can be seen and Lake Semerwater is a pleasant walk away. It is handy for many of the areas famous attractions, including the bustling little market town of Hawes and the pretty villages of Bainbridge and Askrigg, with its pub which was used as the local in the James Herriot series ’All Creatures Great and Small’.
Raydale is a haven for wildlife, with hares and deer often sighted in the surrounding fields at dawn and dusk, along with a wide variety of upland bird life including pheasant, partridge, curlew, duck and of course, Lake Semerwater stocked with a variety of fish. The hamlet of Marsett is set high in the hills above Bainbridge, providing far reaching panoramic views of the dales and fells beyond. Marsett itself has true rustic country charm as cattle and sheep can roam freely on the village green. Horse riding and fishing nearby. Shop, pub and restaurant 3½ miles.
