In the distance the dramatic peak of Addleborough can be seen and Lake Semerwater is a pleasant walk away. It is handy for many of the areas famous attractions, including the bustling little market town of Hawes and the pretty villages of Bainbridge and Askrigg, with its pub which was used as the local in the James Herriot series ’All Creatures Great and Small’.
Raydale is a haven for wildlife, with hares and deer often sighted in the surrounding fields at dawn and dusk, along with a wide variety of upland bird life including pheasant, partridge, curlew, duck and of course, Lake Semerwater stocked with a variety of fish. The hamlet of Marsett is set high in the hills above Bainbridge, providing far reaching panoramic views of the dales and fells beyond. Visit Ryedale Folk Museum and Rosedale Abbey, or for a day out, try the North York Moors Railway. Whitby has miles of sandy beaches and an ancient abbey overlooking its harbour. In addition there are beautiful walks to be taken from the door, an attractive duck pond and the stream down the road from the cottage, and for younger guests a play park within a few minutes’ walk.

Situated in the popular seaside resort of Scarborough, close to the shops and restaurants and just under a mile from the beach, this terraced townhouse is perfect for a family holiday. The owners have catered for the children with a games room that has lots of games plus a pool table. Mill View House is in a quiet area of the town. From the house you can walk to either bay, north or south, both having long sandy beaches making them ideal for families. The North Bay is the quieter of the two and the South Bay has all that you would expect of a traditional seaside resort with donkeys, amusements and children’s rides. You can walk on the promenade the full length of both bays passing the castle perched up on the hillside. If you prefer to take a ride there’s an open top double decker bus that runs along the seafront.
Scarborough has many attractions with the open air theatre, the Scarborough Spa and the Stephen Joseph Theatre. On your walk down to the beach you pass Peasholm Park with it’s beautiful gardens and large lake, a fabulous place to take the kids, there’s boats and pedalos for them to play on. This is also where they do the famous re-enactment of a naval warfare miniature sea battle. The house is situated less than two minutes walk from the train station where you can go by train to York, a medieval city famous for its Minster. There’s so much to do in Scarborough which is why it’s popular both in the summer and winter months. An ideal spot for that family holiday.
Scarborough is just one of many family resorts down the east coast. Further down the coast and just a short drive away is Filey, Flamborough Head and of course the Victorian resort of Bridlington. There’s some fantastic walks along the cliff tops as this is part of the Cleveland Way so very popular amongst walkers. The RSPB bird sanctuary at Bempton is just a few minutes drive away where you can see puffins, gannets and seals in their natural habitat. This is one of the most visited bird sanctuary in the UK.

Head into the town centre where you will find plenty of quaint shops selling all sorts of curiosities from Whitby Jet jewellery to Gothic clothing. Whitby has a hugely popular food and drink scene with many bistros and café bars, as well as traditional fish and chip shops and tea rooms. There are many pubs and bars that offer a warm welcome to dogs and humans alike, as well as the many festivals and events that take place in the town such as the bi-annual Goth Weekender, Steam Punk weekends and the famous folk week.

Venture just a little further out of town for a game of golf or explore some of the hidden gems to be found all along the coast. Take a visit to Robin Hoods Bay, which can be accessed along the Cinder track and Cleveland Way, or any number of bays and coves along this magnificent coastline including Staithes, Runswick Bay and Saltburn. For a complete contrast, you can head inland and take in the breathtaking scenery of the North York Moors National Park. For a different kind of day you can take a steam train from Whitby into Goathland, also known as Aidensfield in the popular Heartbeat TV series. With so much to see and do on your doorstep you may need more than one visit. The traditional Victorian seaside town of Scarborough, just half an hour away with Alpamar Waterpark, Open Air Theatre, attracting some of the worlds top names, and Sealife Centre. Beach 400 yards. Situated at the foot of the North York Moors National Park, Weaver’s Cottage, restored in 2019, retains lots of character and original features. This pretty row of terraced cottages was home to some of the weavers that worked in the mills that were dotted in Pickering and the surrounding villages. Pickering is a bustling market town with lots of restaurants, wine bars and local pubs. There’s a market every Monday held down the high street where locals and tourists enjoy the bargains. You can catch the steam train from Pickering and travel over the North York Moors National Park to Whitby. Stop off at the village of Goathland, home to the fictional village of Aidensfield in the popular TV programme ’Heartbeat’.

Whitby is a bustling seaside town with its majestic abbey standing proud on the headland reached by 199 steps from the cobbled streets lined with independent shops and cafés. Scarborough and Filey lie to the east of Pickering, both fantastic seaside resorts with award winning beaches. The Dalby Forest is a short drive or bike ride from the cottage and is home to one of the World Cup Mountain Bike Trials, and there are challenging runs as well as the easy routes for beginners. The Dalby Forest is also home to ’Go Ape’, a great high rope adventure course through the forest. Just a 10-minute drive away is Flamingo Land Theme Park with exhilarating rides and a fantastic zoo making for a great family day out. Beach 19 miles.
