Scalby, a lovely rural village with a historic church, café/restaurant, shops and two local inns, is only a 15-minute walk from the cottages and, if visitors can bear to leave the comfort and special tranquillity of Barmoor, it is ideally located for walking, cycling or touring the glorious forests, moorland and seascapes which are virtually on the doorstep. Each cottage offers a ‘Drive/walk, good food guide’, compiled by the owners to maximise visitors’ holiday enjoyment.
Among Scarborough’s many attractions are a Sea Life Centre and Theatre in the Round (offering productions and films for all ages) as well as plenty of restaurants, cafés and evening entertainment. Sea trips are available from the harbour and coarse fishing is enjoyed at nearby Throxenby Mere.
The Forge Valley Woodland Reserve lies ½ mile walk from the cottages and quiet lanes lead directly to Langdale Forest. Golf courses and riding stables are found locally and the more energetic might like to tackle the nearby Cleveland Way long distance footpath, with its stunning views over land and sea. The inviting moorland countryside and picturesque villages of ‘Heartbeat’ fame are a joy to explore and a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway is a must.
A 30-minute drive up the coast leads to the many delights of Robin Hood’s Bay and the old port of Whitby, a fascinating historic town, traditionally associated with Count Dracula and in whose attractive harbour tall ships often lie at anchor. The great houses of Sledmere, Burton Agnes and Castle Howard are all within 20 miles of the cottages.

This charming property stands adjoining the owners’ farmhouse and offers a peaceful retreat with dark skies in a quiet location, visited by deer, barn owls and buzzards. The owners may be away occasionally, but help will always be on hand should guests require it. A single-storey barn conversion, it is reached via a farm track (1/3 mile). A hotel is at the end of the farm drive, a bistro is opposite the hotel gates, and the village of Scalby, with its two pubs, café and village shop, is within walking distance. Scarborough, Filey, Robin Hood’s Bay and Whitby are nearby, and the farm is set on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, which is an excellent base for walking in stunning countryside. Situated in the old water mill and overlooking the water wheel, this two bedroom cottage is set within a cobbled courtyard and is a 5-minute drive from the main Broughton Hall Estate and the facilities there. Mill Cottage has been updated to give a truly retro feel both in design and furnishings, with bright and comfortable interiors. Step into a spacious dining area with large table and chairs and snug areas to relax and unwind in. Double doors into the living area with a cosy wood burner, TV and writing desk. The vast 3000-acre grounds are at your disposal, wander down through the estate and admire the imposing stately home of Broughton Hall itself, spot wildlife and birds as well as quaint bridges across the river. Within the estate are the Land Rover Experience offices from where experience days are offered (by direct arrangement with the owner) for an exhilarating drive along the land rover track and obstacles on the estate.
The popular market town of Skipton is 3 miles away and offers a host of things to do for all ages. The Tour de France and the Tour de Yorkshire have both passed through Skipton and the surrounding countryside in recent years. Why not bring your bike and explore some of the routes for yourself? The area is peppered with gourmet pubs serving local produce as well as hearty, traditional pub food and there is a wide variety of restaurants and bars in Skipton to choose from should you wish to treat yourself and dine out during your stay.
