The area is a delight for walkers and cyclists alike, with an abundance of routes to choose from that take in the breathtaking scenery that can be found in all directions. Enjoy a countryside walk, right from your doorstep, down into nearby Staithes and joining onto the Cleveland Way as it snakes across cliff tops and down into hidden coves and bays. Staithes is popular with tourists and has a number of traditional pubs, a coffee shop and even its own independent art gallery. It has a fascinating history of pirates and smugglers, as well as links to Captain Cook who worked here as a child. Nearby Saltburn-by-the-Sea is a fabulous up and coming holiday destination with plenty of places to eat and drink as well as a pier, and is well known in the area as a surfer’s paradise with a number of schools for those wanting to give it a try. There is also horse riding, fishing at Scaling Dam and golf nearby.
The Gothic town of Whitby is just 13 miles away and is famous for its links to Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It offers a hectic schedule of festivals and events all year round including the Goth Weekend, Folk Week and its own Regatta, as well as cobbled streets full of independent shops and traders. The Whitby Abbey towers over the town and can be reached by climbing the famous 199 steps and affords fantastic views of the town and out to sea. There are plenty of traditional dog friendly pubs with live music, tea rooms and delis, as well as some fantastic places to eat. Why not catch a tourist boat out to sea in search of minke whales and seals, or enjoy a trip on the steam train that snakes its way through the National Park into Heartbeat Country. There are plenty of seaside towns and villages to explore along this dramatic coastline, or take a trip to the walled city of York with its many attractions. Oakridge is a stunning example of 1800s architecture with a luxurious, contemporary interior. This semi-detached property offers a large sociable kitchen/dining room for family meals and playing games in front of the Aga before retiring to the living room. Hinderwell is a village with excellent local amenities including a good butchers, convenience store, a local pub and a tea room all just a short walk from your doorstep. This quaint village is just a mile from the picturesque fishing village of Runswick Bay, which boasts a sandy cove with opportunities for fossil hunting and rock pooling, yet right in the North York Moors National Park. Head north or south on the Cleveland Way and visit some of the amazing coastal gems such as Staithes, Robin Hood’s Bay, Sandsend or Saltburn.
The bustling town of Whitby is a short drive or bus ride away where you will find so much to see and do. There is a 3 mile stretch of golden sandy beach, traditional amusement arcades and regular boat trips out to sea in search of minke whales and dolphins. There are many bistros and restaurants ranging from award-winning fish and chips to fine dining as well as tea rooms, coffee shops and pubs with live music. If you’re feeling energetic why not attempt the 199 steps up to the abbey that towers over Whitby.
You can drive inland to enjoy the natural beauty and some amazing heritage sites such as abbeys and monasteries within the National Park or catch a steam train as it snakes through the lush countryside to destinations such as Goathland and Pickering. There is a huge diversity of things to do in the area from surfing to golfing, and there is an abundance of walking and cycling tracks. St Hilda’s Rest is a barn conversion tucked away in a secluded part of the small village of Hinderwell on an award-winning accommodation development.
