Crieff, 7 miles, is where you will find several amenities, including a popular delicatessen, cafés and a supermarket, as well as an array of shops. But, perhaps more appealing, is ‘The Famous Grouse whisky distillery’, at Glenturret, where you can take a tour – you might even get a taste! Several events are also held throughout the year, including ‘The Crieff Highland Games’ and autumn’s ‘Drovers’ Tryst Walking Festival’.

You will be in your element in this area if you are a fan of the outdoors, as the mountains call walkers, hikers and cyclists alike. Loch Earn is ideal for water sports and there are plenty of fishing, golfing, cycling and horse riding opportunities in the surrounding area. Speaking of horse riding, based on the farm there is an equestrian eventing facility, amongst 80 acres of wooded parkland, where you could tackle some of the 100 cross country jumps. If you prefer to stay on your own two feet then walking with the wildlife is highly recommended.

If all that outdoor activity leaves you in search of some retail therapy or a good night out, then the city of Perth is just 7 miles away. Here you will be spoilt for choice with places to wine and dine. You could even go to the theatre! A great way to experience the city is to take a boat trip on the River Tay (seasonal). This area has lots to offer, not least its many historic castles, including Scone Palace, Drummond Castle and Garden, Stirling Castle, Doune Castle, Hopetoun House and for fans of the TV series ‘Outlander’, there are numerous locations used in the making of the series. Edinburgh, Stirling and Glasgow are all easily accessible for day trips. What are you waiting for?

Once the village bakery, this delightful stone cottage retains much of its original appearance and character such as the old pine beams and has a lovely enclosed private suntrap outdoor seating area to the rear. Conveniently situated just off the village street at the centre of the Kirkmichael Path Network and with the village shop and pub/restaurant just down the street this is the perfect location to leave the car in its private parking bay, relax and enjoy village life, explore the surrounding countryside on foot or fish for trout in the river. Alternatively, being at the geographical centre of Scotland with three roads leading out of the village, it is also the perfect touring base with many popular destinations such as the Cairngorm National Park, Perthshire’s lochs and glens, Loch Ness, the Trossachs, east and west coasts and beaches, Edinburgh and more within an easy day trip.

Indoor destinations include Blair Castle, Glamis Castle, Scone Palace, the unique House of Bruar Highland shopping complex, Dundee’s spectacular V&A museum and Discovery Point as well as many National Trust properties. Outdoor activities include golf on a wide range of courses ranging from St Andrews to the highest course in Scotland at Glenshee’s tiny 9 holes, climbing, hill walking, mountain biking on the local trails, bungee jumping, river and loch fishing, boating and winter sports at Glenshee where the chairlifts run all year from the Cairnwell Pass, Scotland’s highest road. The beautiful Victorian resort of Pitlochry is 12 miles away over the magnificent wilderness of the Moulin Moor and the traditional market town of Blairgowrie is 13 miles down the fertile Strathardle Valley. Both towns offer excellent shops, restaurants and leisure facilities including the world-famous Pitlochry Festival Theatre. Sheeoch is a delightful, spacious detached bungalow in the picturesque village of Comrie, just a 10-minute walk from the village centre. This contemporary accommodation is perfect to unwind in after a day exploring. The enclosed rear garden is a great place for children to play in, or relax with a glass of wine in the large, bright living room and take in the superb views. The open-plan kitchen and dining area is a perfect place for everyone to sit together and plan the next day’s adventure.
The village, which is on the banks of the River Earn amidst glorious Perthshire countryside, has a good selection of eating places, local shops, a cricket club and one of Scotland’s most scenic 9-hole golf courses. There are local events, including Comrie Fortnight in early August and Flambeau New Year celebrations. From you doorstep, you can enjoy lots of lovely cycle routes and walks, and for the more adventurous, there are 43 munro mountains within a 1-hour drive. Loch Earn is 6 miles away, which offers sailing and water sports, and for nature lovers, the Auchingarrich Wildlife Centre is just 2 miles. There are many interesting places to visit in the area, including historic castles and gardens, and whisky distilleries. For the more adventurous, the area has much to offer including cycling and hill walking in the Ochil Hills, Auchterarder golf course and the championship Gleneagles course just a short drive away. There is also an equestrian centre, falconry centre and shooting school to enjoy. After a busy day, enjoy a delicious meal at Restaurant Andrew Fairlie, a 2 Michelin star dining experience.
The Royal Burgh of Auchterarder has a 1½ mile long high street, which offers a fine selection of quality independent shops, galleries, cafés and restaurants. For those who enjoy learning of the local culture and history, there are many castles, historic houses and gardens to choose from including Stirling Castle, Doune Castle and Drummond Castle Gardens. There are three whisky distilleries and visitor attractions close by, and with Crieff, Perth and Stirling only a short drive away, you’ll never be stuck for things to do. Just over an hour away are the cosmopolitan cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. If you prefer to leave the car behind, the local railway station provides links to all major towns and cities. Waterloo Farm House is a traditional, stone-built, C-listed, detached cottage with a generous sized garden, providing a wonderful place for couples, friends and families to relax and enjoy this excellent property. Set in the quiet hamlet of Waterloo, it is believed that the original properties in the area were built for the soldiers returning from the Napoleonic Wars or for the widows of soldiers who did not return from the famous battle. It is thought that Waterloo Farm House was built around 1815 and in recent times was a berry farm but is no longer a working farm.
This beautiful cottage has been completely rebuilt internally to provide a modern layout and was just completed in summer 2019, yet still maintains its original charm and character. The welcoming and bright living/dining room has large, comfortable sofas, attractive lighting and a wood burner ensuring this space is a cosy hub for guests to gather. Leading off from the living/dining room is the kitchen, equipped with quality appliances, and a breakfast area. There are stereo ceiling speakers in all rooms providing a shared sound system throughout the house or independent music from your Bluetooth enabled device in your own room if you prefer. The back door leads to a small patio where guests can enjoy breakfast or a morning coffee. There is a large enclosed lawned garden at the front of the property with a patio and garden furniture, ideal for an impromptu barbecue.
Waterloo Farm House is in a great location for exploring this picturesque area which you can do on foot or by bike and there are lots of footpaths and quiet lanes directly from the doorstep. The village of Bankfoot is just 1 mile away, with a pavement all the way from the cottage and is very handy for a local store or one of the two local small hotels with bars. The attractive town of Dunkeld is only 5 miles away and makes a great day out with its historic cathedral and buildings, and a good selection of quality restaurants, coffee shops, delis, interesting independent shops, galleries and walks along the River Tay. Birnam is close by and is one of the best preserved historic towns in Scotland. The Arts Centre is home to the Beatrix Potter Exhibition and Garden which is well worth a visit. Walk along the riverside and discover magnificent old trees in the Birnam Wood which was mentioned in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The bustling city of Perth is only 10 miles away and is packed with places to eat and drink and has a theatre, museum, swimming pool and a great selection of shops including high street names and local boutiques. The railway stations at both Perth and Dunkeld have frequent services to Inverness and Aviemore, or you could be in the centre of Edinburgh in just over an hour without the stress of finding parking.
