Hayle, EnglandThe Light House is in the pretty little village of Gwithian. The Light House is a spacious, dog-friendly, four-bedroom cottage, with an open plan, feel on the ground floor where the conservatory links through to the living room and kitchen. The garden is mainly laid to lawn with a patio to the rear of the house, a great spot to enjoy some al fresco dining or a barbecue. There is a ground floor double bedroom that would ideally suit one person but could accommodate a couple. On the first floor the master bedroom has a kingsize bed and views towards the sea, and another bedroom has a bunk bed. Up on the second floor accessed by steep stairs is a twin bedroom. Please note that the ground floor double bedroom and the shower room can be separated from the rest of the ground floor with the pull down roller blind.
Blasted by the breeze off the Atlantic, the magnificent beach at Gwithian Towans is always a colourful scene of windsurfers on the water, blow karts on the beach and kites in the sky. Backed by sand dunes, tufted with wild grass, at low tide, there is a vast amount of sand to enjoy, and large areas of rock pools are uncovered, which are great for kids to explore. The beach is dog friendly for most of the year with restrictions only applying between 10am and 6pm in July and August. Gwithian Towans is lifeguard patrolled (during high season). There is some great countryside to explore near here, but a highlight is the stunning coastal road between St Ives and St Just where the moorland meets the sea - wild and dramatic! If you take the train to St Ives, the line hugs the coast, and the views are quite beautiful, and the restaurants are superb. Both the north and south coasts are easily accessible, making it an ideal location for those looking to take advantage of the great surfing spots available in this part of Cornwall. Take the scenic coastal train from nearby St Erth to St Ives. The popular seaside town features a quaint harbour and glorious beaches. Budding artists and enthusiasts might like to visit the art gallery, Tate St Ives, or the Barbara Hepworth Museum. Strolling along its cobbled streets, you’ll find that St Ives is home to a host of curiosity shops and galleries. There’s also alfresco fine dining to try in one of the many excellent restaurants dotted along the water’s edge. The area is famous for its beautiful golden stretches, such as the award-winning beach at Carbis Bay, Porthminster and the rolling sand dunes at Hayle. This glorious surfing beach stretches all the way to Gwithian, and enjoys far-reaching views of Godrevy Lighthouse and out to sea.
Nearby, Tehidy Country Park boasts over 25 acres of woodland, cycle trails and bridle paths to explore. St Michael’s Mount (Karrek Loos yn Koos in Cornish, meaning ‘hoar rock in woodland’) is a must-see attraction during your stay. The dining conservatory creates an al fresco ambience of dining under the stars but remains cosy with underfloor heating, and winter evenings will be toasty warm in the dual aspect kitchen/living room with the lovely slate fireplace surrounding the wood burner.
Trebarwith Strand Beach is close by and at low tide a large expanse of golden sand is exposed, with plenty of rock pools and a number of caves, just be careful to always check the tide times. Tintagel is well worth a visit, cross the new suspension bridge to Tintagel Castle and Island where medieval fortifications combine a history of the dark ages with the legend of King Arthur to produce a wonderful day out with many different eateries and pubs to sample as a bonus. The coast path stretches along some of the most rugged cliffs in the southwest, where majestic promontories overlook secluded beaches with golden sands and crashing Atlantic surf. A quick drive will also take you to Boscastle, site of the infamous floods in 2004, or the traditional fishing village of Port Isaac where lovely narrow lanes lead to the charming harbour and beach that Port Isaac is so famous for. Each barn has a well-equipped kitchen as well as open-plan living. Each has its sitting-out area, which is ideal for watching the wildlife and al fresco dining. Each property also has access to electric car charging points which a charged for use however if you require using the charging points you must bring your lead. Note: there are no local amenities as it is a hamlet, but only a 5-minute car journey to the local village, we suggest you look at the welcome folder in the cottage to familiarise yourself with your surroundings and to discover what amenities are local to your stay.
Guests are close to the coastal path and if you walk north, you will reach Tintagel, the mythical home of King Arthur, with its array of shops, pubs and restaurants. A little further on, Boscastle with its picturesque harbour is a must. A small beach can be reached on foot, approximately ½ mile away. Travelling down the coast, guests will come to Port Isaac, where the TV series ’Doc Martin’ is filmed, and further down the coast, visit the beautiful sandy surfing beach at Polzeath and the dunes at Rock where you can take a ferry across to Padstow. From Padstow, with its working harbour, shops, pubs and restaurants, you can hire bikes and cycle the Camel Trail to Wadebridge and beyond to Bodmin.
Close by is Bodmin Moor, an unspoilt moorland at its best, and for walkers the tors on the moor are a must. Further down the coast is Newquay, with its famous surfing beaches, Blue Reef Aquarium and Zoo and if you travel to the south coast, you will find Looe, Fowey and Mevagissey, just a few of the charming coastal villages. For cycling enthusiasts, there is a cycle hub at Lanhydrock, with some wonderful forest routes to be taken.
