Take one of the small ferry services and cross the water to nearby St Mawes, Flushing and Mylor, or take a sightseeing trip or evening cruise down the scenic Helford River, passing many local beaches and coves on route. There is a popular, wildlife sea safari tour where you can watch dolphins, basking sharks, seals and wild birds. Pendennis Castle sits proud on the headland, with its twin St Mawes Castle on the opposite side of the Fal Estuary. Both castles were built by Henry VII. Pendennis (English Heritage) hosts many events through the year, including jousting, history and battle re-enactments, live music and food events, and is open daily to the public.
Falmouth has some of Cornwall’s finest beaches; the sweeping beach at Gyllyngvase has fine white sand, water sports including kayaking, a popular café where you can eat alfresco, or sit and relax in the evening on the glass terrace with a drink overlooking the beach. Helford River and creeks offer visitors quiet relaxing areas, woodland walks and glorious sub-tropical gardens to explore, including nearby Trebah and Glendurgan.
