Travelling west from the barn will first bring you to Wadebridge, a delightful market town with all you need, including bike hire, a cinema, supermarkets and many local craft and gift shops. While on route to Wadebridge, the Camel Trail passes the Camel Valley Vineyard, a family run business that produces award winning wines. Continuing along the trail from Wadebridge, the views open up across the amazing Camel Estuary until you reach the coastal town of Padstow with its working harbour, narrow streets and Rick Stein’s seafood restaurant.
The ancient town of Bodmin has many attractions including the Bodmin and Welford Steam Railway, which leaves the old town station and chugs down the valley to the mainline branch, what a way to tour the county. The ancient Bodmin Jail is also well worth visiting for a little bit of ghoulish history. The surrounding Bodmin Moor offers a great escape from the norm where you can find Jamaica Inn, immortalised in Daphne Du Maurier’s book of the same name. The stunning National Trust property of Lanhydrock House is close by and has many activities throughout the year. You may wish to explore coastal Cornwall, and Chapel Barn is equidistant from both the dramatic north coast and the sub tropical south coast, both with very different scenery. The beaches of the north and the villages of Port Isaac, home to the TV series ’Doc Martin’, and Polzeath have many attractions including many world class golf courses, great local pubs and celebrity chefs including Nathan Outlaw and Rick Stein. The surfing town of Newquay, Watergate Bay and the sea faring and literary town of Fowey, all offer superb and different days while enjoying your stay in Chapel Barn. Cardinham is famed for superb walking through idyllic woodlands with secret glades, stream-side paths, fresh air and stunning viewpoints, it is like an adventure playground for children and dogs, and if you are interested in mountain biking, there are some fantastic trails through the woods so it can be an adventure playground for adults as well. The A30 is half a mile away, which gives amazing access to all parts of Cornwall, from the stunning beaches on the North Coast with acres of golden sands to the cute, traditional fishing villages to the south.
The National Lobster Hatchery at Padstow neighbours Rick Stein’s empire on the North Coast. The Bodmin and Wenford Railway, the first steam-operated railway in Cornwall, takes in 13 miles of countryside. Also just outside Bodmin is the Camel Valley Vineyard who won awards for their homegrown wine for the past 20 years. The National Trust have three properties nearby Lanhydrock House, Trerice and Carnewas and Bedruthan Steps. Slightly further afield is the Eden Project in St Austell. The owner also has a large field opposite with veg garden and, on request, these may also be used by guests. If you are wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of city life you will not find anywhere more peaceful.
Badgers Cottage is traditionally decorated throughout to a high standard. The comfortable living room and conservatory dining room give you plenty of space to spread out and relax, whilst the kitchen is well-equipped and any budding chef on holiday will enjoy cooking up a storm. Also on the ground floor is a double aspect twin room with whitewashed walls and cool tiled floor. Stairs from the hallway lead up to the first floor where you’ll find the second bedroom, with comfortable double bed, plenty of storage and panoramic views. Completing the first floor is the family bathroom. A “gardeners toilet” is located outside.
Before Warleggan was linked to the A38 in 1953 and more recently to the A30 it was considered one of the remotest parts of the county, now a mere 4 miles from the dual carriageway this hamlet offers fabulous links to both the North Coast and its glorious golden sands, secluded coves and wild promontories but also the pretty fishing villages and artists retreat along the South Coast including Looe and Polperro, the Eden project, Lanhydrock House and the start of the Camel trail. There is a pub & shop 3.5 miles away at St Neot. Bodmin, with all amenities, including various large supermarkets is 7 miles away.
