If visiting the seaside is of interest to you, why not head a little bit further out to Roanhead Beach near Ulverston or Humphrey Head?
Other close by popular towns include Cartmel, 4 miles, a traditional Cumbrian village famous for its sticky toffee pudding and race course. The towns of Kendal, 12 miles, Windermere, 13 miles, and Coniston, 20 miles, all have plenty to offer. The south Lake District is only a 10-minute drive away, with Newby Bridge nearby which is home to the Lakes Aquarium.
Whilst most people visit the area to walk, there are plenty of other outdoor activities on offer. There is a golf course within 2 miles, a leisure centre with swimming pool at Kendal, 12 miles, and at Grizedale Forest, 13 miles, there is mountain biking, Segways and the Go Ape treetop adventure. This charming holiday cottage is situated on a quiet corner in the heart of the ancient market town of Ulverston. It offers quick and easy access to the many delights of Ulverston, home to the start of the Cumbria Way, with its old pubs, excellent restaurants and the twice-weekly market which is not to be missed. The Lake District National Park, Eskdale Railway, the World of Beatrix Potter and the Furness Coast are all within easy reach, as well as Lake Windermere and Lake Coniston which are 12 miles away. Ulverston has a wide range of shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs, a cinema and a leisure centre. Today it’s well known as a festival town with events throughout the year, including walking and art festivals in the summer months and the renowned Dickensian festival in late November. One of the town’s great claims to fame is as the birthplace of Stan Laurel. Whilst many Lakeland destinations have been developed beyond recognition, Ulverston still has an authentic feel and community spirit. All of the attractions of the National Park are easily reached. Bardsea and Askam beach are nearby, as is Dalton Zoo and the Dock Museum in Barrow. The Furness Coast boasts sandy beaches and good bird watching. Seaton is a lovely village just two miles from the Cumbrian Coast with an excellent pub just a few hundred yards up the road and shops nearby. The major town of Workington offers all your usual high street brands and supermarkets as well as a good range of bars and plenty of places to eat. Pippin Howe is central to several popular tourist attractions and areas. Jump in the car and you are just 20 minutes from the long stretch of beach at Allonby or 25 minutes to the sandy beaches of St Bees. The Solway Coast is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is well worth a visit. The harbour of town of Maryport is 15 minutes’ away and has a range of family attractions.
You can reach the tourist magnet of Keswick in 30 minutes and Bassenthwaite with The Lake District Wildlife Park and The Lakes Distillery in 25 minutes. If you love the outdoors, there’s beautiful scenery and popular walking trails all around. One of the most scenic areas of The Lake District is the drive via Loweswater, Crummock and Buttermere over the Honister pass around the side of Derwentwater to Keswick, so if you like natural beauty and sightseeing, this is one not to be missed.
