Explore just a few miles further and you will find the historic town of Arundel, the seaside town of Worthing and the Goodwood Estate, where thrilling events such as the famous Festival of Speed and the Goodwood Revival take place. Also the easy driving distance to Chichester with its cathedral, festival theatre, leisure facilities and Goodwood or Fontwell Races, or Midhurst with Cowdray Polo and shops. There are many scenic walks including in the South Downs National Park. Also within easy driving distance (or train ride) is the cosmopolitan city of Brighton to the east, and Portsmouth to the west, which has the Spinnaker Tower, ferry trips to the Isle of Wight and designer retail shopping. Properties 17320 and 17321 command fine views over the surrounding countryside. 17320 also has a worktop which has been lowered for wheelchair access to the sink in the kitchen. Situated in the grounds of the family farm (non-working), they are only 100 yards from the village of Compton with village shop and tea room with free wi-fi access. Enjoy peaceful walks along a bridle path leading to the South Downs Way, 2 miles designated as a National Park. The historic cathedral town of Chichester lies 10 miles away, with its cobbled streets adorned with tea rooms and restaurants, and the ornate cathedral. Scenic boat tours can be taken around the harbour. Goodwood and Fontwell races or polo at Cowdray are all within a short drive. Portsmouth, with shopping and leisure facilities, within easy reach. Tucked away at the end of a farm road surrounded by stunning Sussex countryside is the beautifully converted, detached, old dairy called Woodlands Dairy Cottage. Originally part of a working dairy farm within 86 acres, now with sheep and beef cattle. Lambing in springtime is not to be missed. Footpaths and great country walks emanate from the doorstep so pull on your wellies and start exploring! All the accommodation is on one floor and the cottage is wheelchair friendly. Storage is available for bicycles to explore the many bridleways which run through woodlands and open country.
The area is steeped in history as Stane Street, now known as the A29, was built by the Romans. Woodlands Dairy Cottage is ideally placed for great days out visiting the South Downs National Park, the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum, Fishers Farm Adventure Park, Arundel Castle and Gardens, Arundel Cathedral and the magnificent 900-year-old Chichester Cathedral. Brighton is 45 minutes’ drive with its vibrant marina, historic shopping Lanes and the Regency Royal Pavilion built by King George IV. You can take a boat trip along the restored section of the Wey and Arun Canal or along the River Arun from Arundel. West Sussex is famed for its many vineyards which can be visited.
Petworth House houses great collections and its deer park was designed by Grinling Gibbons. Cowdray is the home of British polo and the coveted Gold Cup which draws teams of the best players from all over the world. Goodwood, with its magnificent house, is also the home to the summer Glorious Goodwood horse race meeting as well as the hugely popular Festival of Speed and Revival for Motor Racing attracting motor enthusiasts from across the globe.
The RSPB’s Pulborough Wetlands are a must for bird fanciers. There are numerous beaches within 16 miles, good pubs and restaurants close by together with prime food shops selling local produce and two supermarkets within a 4-mile drive. There are plenty of golf courses, fishing is available locally, as well as many spectacular gardens to visit. Theatres at Chichester, Brighton and Guildford often have pre-West End shows. Walk to Horsted Keynes station and take a steam train! This delightful rural cottage is in sublime Sussex countryside. Sheriff Cottage is in a most rural and tranquil setting beside a quiet lane, close to the village of Horsted Keynes. Built during the late Victorian period, the cottage is the end of a group of three attached cottages.

As you open the front door you enter a light and airy dining hall with high ceilings and room for six people to eat in comfort. The living room at the front of the cottage is a peaceful haven for relaxation with comfortable sofas and an armchair furnished to give a period ambience. The kitchen is compact and well equipped for preparing your meals. Upstairs there are three bedrooms and a bathroom with a period-style, freestanding bath. The garden at Sheriff Cottage is a real feature. It is a mix of traditional, herbaceous, English cottage garden planting and a collection of black bamboo, giving a modern twist. The garden room adjacent to the cottage is a spacious extra sitting room perfect for watching DVDs on the large flat screen TV or relaxing with a book or a board game.

Half a mile down the lane is Horsted Keynes station on the Bluebell Railway. The Bluebell celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2010 and runs from Sheffield Park to East Grinstead where it connects with mainline services. This has taken the line to a total distance of about 12 miles passing through some of the most picturesque Sussex countryside that you will find.
Horsted Keynes is a small village just under 2 miles south east of Sheriff Cottage. It has two pubs and a traditional general store selling all the essential every day food items. Slightly further south and right beside the station at Sheffield Park, Sheffield Park Garden is a magnificent informal landscape garden laid out in the 18th Century by ’Capability’ Brown. To the west, Wakehurst Place is one of the National Trust’s most visited places and country home for the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew. Immediately to the south of East Grinstead, Standen is hidden at the end of a quiet Sussex lane with breathtaking views over the High Weald and Weirwood Reservoir. A little further afield at Handcross, Nymans House and Gardens is another National Trust property and so similar in appeal to both Sheffield Park and Wakehurst Place, while the Ardingly Resevoir which nestles into the wooded hillside near to Balcombe offers many walks and the opportunity to enjoy or simply watch watersports on the 198 acres of water.

A charming flint cottage set in a wonderful South Downs hamlet with stunning countryside views and walks on the doorstep. This former farm building was once part of the Duke of Norfolk’s Estate and now is a wonderful holiday retreat with panoramic views of the South Downs.

Walnut Tree Cottage has an open plan living space with access to the patio with garden furniture, perfect spot for breakast with uninterrupted views. The kitchen is well-equipped and there are two bedrooms, one with en-suite facilities, and a separate bathroom.

Patching is a quaint village centred along ’The Street’. At the top as the lane climbs towards the South Downs is the church and beside that the Walnut Tree Cottage. Footpaths lead from here to the Downs on a number of different routes. To the east is Long Furlong, a magnificent crescent-shaped piece of downland - it’s like the South Downs in miniature. It is easily reached from the neighbouring village of Clapham where a walk along the top gives great views inland. Take the downland paths around the woodland of Angmering Park and you reach the attractive villages of Wepham and Burpham 3 miles to the west. Like Patching they lie at the foot of the Downs and are frequented by walkers. The George and Dragon is a traditional English country pub set right in the heart of Burpham and is worth visiting - it is hard to pass by when enjoying a walk to Burpham!

Just across the Arun valley there is Arundel, a historic market town dominated by the symbolic castle and the rising spire of the cathedral. It offers a plethora of craft and antique shops as well as restaurants and tea rooms. It’s a great place to wander and just enjoy its hospitality. Arundel Castle is the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk and is set in 40 acres of sweeping grounds and gardens. The castle has been seasonally open to visitors for nearly 200 years. It is one of the great treasure houses of England and is home to priceless works of art in stunning rooms. Climbing the 131 steps to the Keep which dates from the 11th century to take in the views over Arundel and The South Downs is definitely worth the effort.

The River Arun winds its way around the town and is a magnet for wildlife. With more than 60 acres of ponds lakes and reed beds, Arundel Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust attracts some of the world’s most spectacular ducks, geese and swans. The best way to enjoy the river is on a river cruise stopping off at the Black Rabbit pub or proceeding further north where the river hugs the scarp wooded slope at the foot of the Downs before reaching Amberley.

Further afield Walnut Tree Cottage is well placed for the coast. Climping Beach and Littlehampton’s West Beach are only a short drive away. The nearest beach is Goring Beach. This is a beautiful unspoilt length of beach of Special Scientific Interest and at the eastern end beside the mouth of the River Arun is the West Beach Cafe, built by local craftsmen using materials sourced locally. It is worth a visit an the fish and chips come highly recommended. Goodwood and Fontwell racecourses are nearby along with the cathedral city of Chichester with its excellent Festival Theatre noted for not only the quality of productions but also the fact many world premieres are featured. Downsview Park is ideally situated just over a mile south of the beautiful town of Arundel. Individual shops, stunning architecture, imposing castle and riverside location make this a must spend day or two during your holiday. The WWT Wetland Centre, Swanbourne Lake and South Downs National Park with its pretty villages and fabulous hiking opportunities are all within 5 minutes. Numerous stately homes and gardens are dotted around the area. Goodwood with its world famous motor circuit and horse racing venue is a 20 minute easy drive. The pretty grass runway airport here offers the chance to take an airborne sightseeing experience offering memorable views of the coastline including Portsmouth Dockyards, Gunwharf Quays and the Spinnaker Tower that by road are a 40 minute drive. Lunch or tea airside in this stunning location is also possible. Dogs are welcomed everywhere at Goodwood. Two championship golf courses are on the estate and spa experiences available at the hotel. Tours and afternoon tea are available also here at the stately home. Chichester with its cathedral and Festival Theatre are a short drive, Brighton being 18 miles distant. Dog friendly beaches abound with quite a collection very nearby, a favourite being West Beach at Climping where there is the lovely Baliffscourt for a special dining treat.
