The village of Loftus has good amenities, including three pubs, a Gin palace with micro-brewery, local grocery shops, bakery and an award winning bookshop stocking plenty of local authors and gifts. In the ‘Iron Valley’ of Skinningrove you’ll find secluded beaches and The Tom Leonard Mining Museum.

Enjoy the fishing port of Whitby, with its winding cobbled streets, famous abbey and wonderful fish and chips, or explore the spectacular coastline and dramatic North York Moors. This beautiful detached barn conversion is tucked away in the courtyard of Lane End Farm. Dating back to the 1800’s, Lane End Cottage has been renovated in 2019 to a good standard. Set within a rural smallholding, be charmed by the wildlife passing by your window, with ducks and chickens being frequent visitors and sheep in the field nearby. There are two outside seating areas, a small courtyard outside the barn, providing a great spot to sit with a coffee and appreciate the beautiful morning sunrise, with a further point which is shared with the owners and accessed across the farmyard to sit and take in the countryside views of the valley beyond.

The cottage is approximately a mile from the coastal town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, with some great local amenities including restaurants, pubs and some micro-breweries. The town is rapidly gaining a reputation as a ‘foodie destination’. The monthly food festival is a must visit on any holiday itinerary. Saltburn-by-the-Sea also boasts a great beach to enjoy, with an historic cliff lift and long pier from which to admire the views.
Getting out and about, there’s an abundance of things to do. With the wonderful scenery of the North York Moors National Park to explore, why not enjoy a day on the North York Moors Railway? With miles of coastal and moorland footpaths, this part of rural North Yorkshire is a walkers and bird watchers paradise.
Upleatham makes a great base from which to set out and explore, with the coastal resorts of Saltburn, Staithes and Whitby a short drive away. The ancient market town of Guisborough is 3 miles, amongst its attractions, the ancient priory is worth a visit, providing a fabulous venue for a variety of events throughout the year. Brotton Village is just on the edge of Saltburn-by-the-Sea (voted Top Staycation Destination 2024) and you are only a 2-minute walk away from the nearest village pub. For golf lovers, Brotton boasts one of the best golf courses in North Yorkshire. There are also a couple of takeaways and a small village shop here. The bus stop on the high street through the village gives you the option of leaving your car for the day whilst exploring the area. You are in the perfect position to explore the surrounding coastline.
This is a walker’s paradise as the Cleveland Way walking trail connects all the little coastal villages and towns, before continuing out onto the North York Moors National Park – it is over 110 miles long but it is well worth doing smaller sections to enjoy some of the most incredible cliff top views. Neighbouring Saltburn has an impressive Victorian pier to watch the rolling waves, it’s a surfers’ paradise and you can watch as they ride the waves, or join in at the local surf school. There is an array of coffee shops, wine bars and independent shops here, as well as some wonderful restaurants for you to choose from.
Skinningrove is only 2 miles away and has the most incredible beach tucked away there, for beach lovers it is a must. Enjoy the nearby quirky fishing villages of Staithes, 7 miles, and Robin Hood’s Bay, 25 miles, or the unspoilt sandy beaches of Sandsend, 16 miles, and Runswick Bay, 9 miles. Whitby, 20 miles, is steeped in history and many visitor attractions are connected to the town’s fascinating past, such as the Captain Cook Memorial Museum where you can learn about the famous explorer’s life in the port town. A trip to Whitby would not be the same without climbing the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey, and exploring the ruins and views that tower over the town.

For walkers there are walking trails across the national park, including the Cleveland Way along the cliff tops, or Roseberry Topping which offers stunning panoramic views. If you are fascinated by history visit Guisborough Priory and Whitby Abbey, as well as museums including Staithes Heritage Museum, Whitby’s Captain Cook Museum and Hutton le Holes Folk Museum. On the moors there are many pretty rural villages to visit, or why not enjoy a trip on the steam train from Whitby to take in the scenery.
