The Watercress Line steam railway goes from Alton, trundling through pleasant countyside through the village of Ropley and on to Alresford. Nearby in sleepy Selborne you can walk up the famous zig-zag pathway, enjoy the views and explore the hangers, or visit Gilbert White’s House and The Oates Collection. This hidden gem was home to naturalist Gilbert White, author of `The Natural History of Selborne’ and boasts a wonderful 20-acre garden. The Old Cook House is a detached bungalow set in the grounds of the owners’ smallholding in Winchester. This ground-floor property offers peaceful accommodation for guests wanting to explore this rural location, but also within easy reach of the coast.
The Old Cook House boasts a king-size bedroom, and a twin bedroom also offers a well-equipped kitchen, a bathroom with an L-shaped bath and shower, as well as a living area complete with a feature fireplace (for ornamental purposes only), and a Smart TV. There is also the benefit of a boot room for when you need to dry off your dog. Outside, there is an enclosed garden with a private seating area where you can relax and take in the surroundings.
The property is set in a quiet location with walks directly from the property and a recreation ground with plenty of equipment for young children, a football pitch and a tennis court. In the opposite direction there are walks with views of Winchester Cathedral and the local supermarket is just a 10-minute walk away. Historic Winchester has various museums including The Great Hall with the Round Table. Marwell Zoo and Winchester Science Centre with Planetarium are within a 15-minute drive. Winchester Cathedral’s Christmas Market is very popular with its bustling atmosphere. The Watercress Line and Hinton Ampner Gardens are within a 30-minute drive. Jane Austin’s House and Gilbert White’s House and Gardens, Peppa Pig World and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard are within a 40-minute drive. During the First World War, the village was used by the army which had an extensive veterinary hospital for horses. After the war the camps were split up into agricultural small holdings and the army huts were used as dwellings; part of this cottage was the army cookhouse, hence the name. There were many huts here in the 1960’s however The Old Cook House is the only remaining army hut in the area.

This lovely lodge is set next to another lodge on site (UK35188- Hillside Hideaway). This is also wonderful walking and birdwatching country with numerous activities available nearby including golf, fishing and riding - a perfect location for exploring the borderlands of England and Wales, southern Snowdonia and Aberystwth’s seaside attractions.

On site the owners have a fantastic herd of Alpacas and they offer guests the opportunity to participate in alpaca trekking around the land that surrounds the properties. This needs to be booked direct with the owner and paid for in advance. The land that surrounds the lodges is elevated and takes in stunning views which guests can use to relax in. Set on one level, this property is fully open plan. The kitchen includes fridge, electric cooker, hob and sink and there is a dining table within the lodge. There are three single beds and a shower room which includes a shower cubicle, toilet and sink. There is a private sitting area with garden furniture to the front of the property with a barbecue. A breakfast hamper made up of local produce is available on request at £6 per person (minimum order for 2).

Fresh for the Summer Season of 2021, Poppy’s by the Sea is located in Hayling Island on a private road, moments from the beach. A detached four-bedroom holiday home, able to comfortably accommodate up to eight guests it’s also dog friendly too. The beaches of this popular isle are surrounded by sheltered waters across from the Isle of Wight, making it ideal for water sports activities. It is renowned for its windsurfing and sailing activities, kayaking, power boating, jet ski-ing, kite surfing and wake boarding. Local paddle-boating and windsurfing lessons are available close by. Every year there is a national windsurfing event, and a hive of sailing and nautical activity can be seen along the coastline.
Many activities can be enjoyed locally for all ages, including a seaside railway, fun fair and West Beachlands, great for sandcastles at low tide! Free play includes beach volleyball and adventure play areas. For the sports enthusiast, Seacourt is also worth a visit, with five racket sports. Other nearby activities include golf, horse riding, boat trips and scenic walks along the water’s edge, or walks along the South Downs National Park which is within easy reach. Set in the pretty village of Trefeglws, Chateau Petit is a detached lodge that offers guests a quiet and peaceful spot to unwind. Set on the grounds of the owner’s own property, it is surrounded by the scenery of the Severn Valley with views from the property. Standing detached, with a large attractive enclosed garden, picnic furniture and decked seating area just outside the front door this property is ideal for guests looking for a peaceful retreat. Chateau Petit is set on one level with a kitchen/living area with a small dining area which is perfect for creating a romantic meal for two. The bedroom has a double bed and hanging space and cupboards for clothes. Great for doggy holidays too! With one small dog welcome, there is plenty of secure space in the large garden and a small paddock to run around as long as owner is in attendance and dog kept in view.
Llanidloes, voted one of the most desirable places to live in Wales is just 5 miles and hosts an array of bars, shops and restaurants including takeaways. Trefeglwys includes a pub and shop also a new restaurant or pizza bar with beautiful grounds to walk with pools and great outdoor eating opportunities too. Dog friendly 10 min walk from Chatea Petit. Being set just 5 miles north of Llanidloes, it makes an ideal base for touring Mid Wales. There is much to see and do within the area for even the most active of guests including beautiful walks on Bryn Y Fan and Hafren Forest enjoying the stunning scenery, the Clywedog Reservoir offers a range of fishing or slightly further afield there is the Elan Valley Dams at Rhayader. Beautiful seaside town of Aberdyfi withe fantastic beach only 50 minutes away. Shop, pub and restaurant 5 miles away.

Carefully converted to allow for maximum space and light, these four single-storey barn conversions stand within the owner’s working stud farm, and offer the ideal base for couples, walking groups and families wishing to enjoy a farm lifestyle, yet are within easy driving distance to many attractions. Little Barn is detached, and Chiddock Cottage, Chidley Cottage and Cozy Cottage adjoin one another in a L-shape.
All the barn conversions have high vaulted ceilings and plentiful beams with spacious open-plan living areas. All have rustic concrete floors with rugs and are furnished using natural woods of differing origins. Discover scenic walks from the door, Midgham Farm Copse lies at the end of a track within 40 acres of woodland along the Avon Valley path, which leads all the way from Christchurch to Salisbury. For those that like the outdoor lifestyle there is on-site archery, axe throwing and fishing in the River Avon (licence required). Nearby there is horse riding, and the New Forest Water Park. For those bringing dogs, there are plenty of excellent walks all around.
Places to visit include Alderholt Mill, which has a working watermill open to visitors, and Moors Valley Country Park and Forest, which has orienteering, cycle hire, golf, forest Segway, and more. Avon Heath Country Park, within easy driving distance, is ideal for keen ramblers. Fordingbridge and Ringwood both have a host of shops, cafés and eateries, and are nearby. Lantern Cottage is a delightful, welcoming, end-of-terrace period cottage, which is beautifully presented and dog friendly for one medium-sized dog. It has been refurbished in 2021 and is located within a 7-minute level walk of Lyndhurst village and the beautiful open forest. Ideal for a family or couples for a romantic or active break together. On the ground floor you’ll find a cosy living room with a TV and a wood burner to snuggle up in front of, a dining room and a galley kitchen, along with a bathroom; whilst upstairs are the two bedrooms. There are a number thoughtful personal touches on display in the property including a wine bottle honesty rack, help yourself to a bottle on the house but please replace any more before you leave. There are two enclosed gardens with furniture to sit in and enjoy the sun after a day’s activities.
Lyndhurst is a wonderful village with a superb array of amenities. Often referred to as the ‘Capital of the New Forest’ it offers a variety of outdoor pursuits and places of interest with the open forest easily accessible for walking and riding. The village boasts an eclectic range of cafés, restaurants, two supermarkets and bakeries. Bike hire is also available (electric too of you fancy an easier ride). There are two mainline railway stations: Ashurst within 2½ miles and Brockenhurst just shy of 4 miles with direct links to London Waterloo.

The village car park has electric charging points for visitors with EVs.There is much to do in The New Forest with attractions for all ages, including Paulton’s Park with Peppa Pig World just a short drive away. Beaulieu Motor Museum, the riverside village of Bucklers Hard and many picturesque villages are also close by just waiting to be discovered. Shops, pubs, and restaurants are just a short walk away and there are several beaches about 15 minutes’ drive away.
