Owl Cottage is a delightful retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life with its location in the centre of one of the most picturesque villages in Sussex and surrounded by the South Downs National Park. The cottage is all one level and the entrance is easily accessed by a sloping pathway.

On entering the cottage through the porch you arrive into the beautifully decorated living area with a pitched ceiling giving it a light and spacious feel. With a comfortable settee and armchairs surrounding the wood burner there is a warm and welcoming feel immediately. The kitchen fitted with modern amenities including a useful washing machine with drying facility, great for those muddy days on the Downs and French doors open to the garden with table and chairs to enjoy in the summer months. The spacious bedroom has ample wardrobe space and a kingsize bed. A shower room completes the picture.

The garden area to the front of Owl Cottage has a lovely bench and a sweet garden pond which the local birdlife love. Within minutes of Owl Cottage you will find a bustling tea room local shop and a choice of three local hostelries within short walking distance.

Amberley is at the foot of the South Downs and is noted for its many thatched cottages. It is a village that has managed to retain its character and appeal over the centuries and it will delight all visitors. The River Arun with its tidal plain cuts through the South Downs at Amberley. The South Downs Way crosses the river beside the village where a walk either east or west will soon present you with stunning Downland views and total seclusion. The tidal river plain north of the village forms the Amberley Wildbrooks, a Site of Special Scientific Interest known for its wildfowl and maintained by Sussex Wildlife Trust. The RSPB reserve at Pulborough Brooks neighbours Amberley and is a wetland haven for bird life and an overwintering ground for many migrant species. It has many opportunities for studying the wild life from several strategically located hides.

Only a mile away is the Amberley Working Museum which was used as a set location for the James Bond Film ’A View to a Kill’. It is a 36-acre open air museum set into a chalk quarry and is dedicated to the industrial heritage of South East England. There are many themed events throughout the year so it is worth taking a look to see what’s on. Two miles to the east, Parham House and Gardens is an imposing Elizabethan house facing the Downs. The rooms are graced with fresh flowers cut daily from the four acre walled garden. The main rooms are the Great Hall, Great Chamber and the Long Gallery which at the top of the house does leave a tremendous visual impression. Five miles downstream from Amberley, south of the Downs, you come to Arundel, a historic market town dominated by the symbolic castle and the rising spire of the cathedral. If you fancy making your visit a little different why not catch the train one stop down the line and come back on the river. The town offers a plethora of craft and antique shops as well as restaurants and tea rooms. A trip to Arundel would never be complete without visiting the castle. The seat of the Dukes of Norfolk and set in 40 acres of sweeping grounds and gardens Arundel Castle has been seasonally open to visitors for nearly 200 years. It is one of the great treasure houses of England and to climb the 131 steps to the Keep to take in the views is worth the effort.

Places to visit and events include RSPB Pulborough Brooks, Sussex Game, Country Fair, Goodwood Festival of Speed, Petworth Festival, Arundel Festival and Goodwood Revival. Beach 10⅓ miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 200 yards.

From the winding front path, a circular boot room reveals the entrance hall with a cosy reading corner and stairs to the first floor. To the left of the hall is an attractive beamed sitting room where deep, comfortable sofas, low level lighting, large Smart TV and an open fireplace create a relaxed, welcoming ambience. Across the hall, the long living room has a sofa and leads to the spacious kitchen at the far end of the house. With a huge island breakfast bar, triple electric Aga, an upholstered pew bench and doors to the garden, it is a fabulous space to find inspiration for a dinner party. A convenient utility room lies to the side, and set off the sitting room at the centre of the house, the orangery has a long dining table and corner sofas facing out into the garden through French doors. A lovely spot for canapés, with the evening sun casting its dappled light through the trees.
Upstairs on the first floor are four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a study. The vast triple-aspect master features a striking four-poster, kingsize bed and garden views, and the second bedroom has a double bed with dressing area. Bedrooms three and four have zip and link beds that can be set up as doubles on request. On the second floor is a hidden delight tucked out of the way from the main social areas: a TV/games den complete with bean bags. The perfect hideaway for the kids to enjoy their own private holiday space.
Outside, to the front of the house is a car port with table tennis, and a lawn with bistro table. To the rear, a huge patio with dining and lounge furniture leads out to extensive, securely enclosed gardens fringed with mature trees and shrubs. North Hurst sits on the edge of the quiet, leafy village of West Chiltington Common which lies in the lea of the South Downs. The area sits in the heartland of the renowned Sussex wine region, with the famous Nyetimber Vineyard just a couple of miles up the road. Also nearby are Nutbourne and Ambriel, along with Upperton, Stopham and Kinsbrook. The South Downs National Park is a mile from the village, West Chiltington Common being about half way along its entire length and not too far from Chanctonbury Ring. The Wildbrooks at nearby Pulborough offers many excellent walks along the banks of the River Arun, and uninterrupted views south towards the Downs. Three miles south in the direction of Storrington at the foot of the South Downs, Parham House is a magnificent Elizabethan home. To the east is the bustling city of Brighton, promising a great evening out, and 15 minutes to the north is Cissbury Ring, where you will see impressive panoramic views over Sussex. The beaches in this area remain quiet even during the busiest summer periods and with man made rock islands just off the shore and accessible at low tide, the beach is wonderful to explore and is ideal for swimming, fishing, windsurfing and walking. Elmer is an ideal location to explore many of the attractions of the south coast from bustling Brighton 25 miles to the east, to historic Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight to the west. In-between there are beautiful places such as Chichester with its cathedral and festival theatre, quaint Arundel, 5 miles to the north with its castle, river, antique shops, restaurants and famous wetland bird centre, Goodwood and Fontwell race courses and the beautiful South Downs are all close by. Set in most picturesque and private cottage gardens, this detached cottage is just two miles from Arundel and has an abundance of footpaths to the South Downs on the doorstep. From the gardens and upstairs windows there is the most glorious outlook and the garden beckons guests to relax and enjoy those lazy summer days. The cottage is bright and traditionally furnished and is a comfortable size for up to six guests. It has three upstairs bedrooms the master bedroom has a kingsize bed with an en-suite shower room. The second bedroom has a standard double bed and the third bedroom with a dual outlook, gives a fresh and bright feel and is fitted with twin beds, the family bathroom completes the property. The gardens here just encourage and welcome you outside and offer complete privacy. They are neatly maintained offering many areas to meander around and explore. There is a raised path which guests need to take care when using that really open up the views over the Sussex Downs.

This area is ideal for walking and from the lower slopes of the Downs there are wonderful views to the coast and to the east and west. Arundel two miles away is a historic market town dominated by the symbolic castle that can be seen to the south of Burpham. It offers a plethora of craft and antique shops as well as restaurants and tea rooms. It’s a great place to visit and just enjoy the hospitality during any day of the week.

Arundel Castle is the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk and is set in 40 acres of sweeping grounds and gardens. The castle has been seasonally open to visitors for nearly 200 years and is one of the great treasure houses of England and is home to priceless works of art in stunning rooms. Climbing the 131 steps to the Keep which dates from the 11th Century to take in the views over Arundel and The South Downs is definitely worth the effort. Beyond the castle grounds is Arundel Park which is clearly visible across the valley from the cottage. The River Arun winds its way around the town and is a magnet for wildlife. With more than 60 acres of ponds lakes and reed beds at Arundel Wetland Trust attracts some of the world’s most spectacular ducks geese and swans. The best way to enjoy the river is on a river cruise stopping off at the pub for a bite to eat or just some liquid refreshments.

Further afield Climping Beach and Littlehampton’s West Beach are only a short drive away. This is a beautiful unspoilt length of beach of Special Scientific Interest and at the eastern end beside the mouth of the River Arun is the West Beach. Goodwood and Fontwell racecourses are nearby along with the cathedral city of Chichester with its excellent Festival Theatre noted for not only the quality of productions but also the fact many world premieres are featured as well. If you fancy a day in the city, Arundel mainline station is on a direct route to London so why not mix the cosmopolitan capital with this great place to stay.
